What is a birth chart? A birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky at the moment you were born, calculated from your birth date, time and place. It's also called a natal chart. Because it's a snapshot of one moment, it never changes.

If you're new to astrology, this is the right place to start. This guide covers what's inside a birth chart, the three details you need to make one, how to read the chart wheel, what a chart can't do and what you'll see in your own free chart.

Key takeaways

  • A birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born.
  • It's built from three details: your birth date, birth time and birth place.
  • Inside it you'll find planets, signs, houses and aspects, which answer what, how, where and how they connect.
  • A chart doesn't predict a fixed future, and astrology isn't proven science.
  • Many people use it as a tool for reflection, and that's how we present it.

What is a birth chart? The sky as a snapshot

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky as seen from your birthplace at the moment you were born. Imagine taking a photo of the heavens at that exact minute and place, then drawing it as a circle. That drawing is your chart.

The snapshot idea explains two things. First, it never changes, even though the planets keep moving. Second, it's personal to your birth moment. A different time or a different city gives a different chart.

Western astrology, which is what we use, measures the zodiac from the seasons (the tropical zodiac). Vedic astrology uses a different starting point, so the same birth can show different signs.

What is inside a birth chart?

A birth chart contains four main ingredients: planets, signs, houses and aspects. A simple way to remember them is what, how, where and how they connect.

PartWhat it isThe question it answers
PlanetsThe Sun, Moon and the planets from Mercury to PlutoWhat energy or drive is this?
SignsThe twelve zodiac signsHow does that energy show up?
HousesTwelve areas of lifeWhere in your life does it happen?
AspectsThe angles between planetsHow do they interact?

Planets. In astrology, the Sun and Moon count as planets too. Each one stands for a part of you: the Sun for your core self, the Moon for your emotional life, Mercury for how you think and communicate, Venus for what you value and love, Mars for drive, and so on.

Signs. Each planet sits in one of the twelve signs, which colours how it shows up. Your Sun in Gemini and your Sun in Capricorn are the same planet, expressed in different styles.

Houses. The chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked to an area of life. House 1 is self, 2 resources, 3 communication, 4 home, 5 creativity and romance, 6 routines and work, 7 partnerships, 8 shared resources, 9 beliefs and travel, 10 career, 11 friends and community, and 12 the inner world.

Aspects. An aspect is an angle between two planets. The five major ones are:

AspectAngleOften read as
Conjunction0 degreesTwo planets blending together
Sextile60 degreesA supportive link
Square90 degreesFriction that pushes you to act
Trine120 degreesAn easy flow
Opposition180 degreesTwo pulls in opposite directions

Your chart also marks a few key points, including your Rising sign, which is the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth. Not sure what that is? Read what is a rising sign.

What do you need to make a birth chart?

You need three details to make a birth chart: your birth date, your birth time and your birth place. Each one matters for a different reason.

  1. Birth date. It sets where the Sun, Moon and planets were. This alone gives you your Sun sign and your planets in signs.
  2. Birth time. It sets your Rising sign and your houses, because the sky turns about once a day.
  3. Birth place. It sets your local horizon and time zone. Enter the clock time from your record, along with your birth city.

You can still get part of a chart without your birth time, though your Rising sign and houses will be missing.

How do you read a birth chart wheel?

A chart wheel is a circle with the zodiac signs around the outside, twelve houses inside and planet symbols placed where each planet was. Read it from the outside in.

  1. The outer ring shows the twelve zodiac signs.
  2. Planet symbols sit in the sign and house where each planet was.
  3. The twelve numbered sections inside the wheel are the houses.
  4. The left edge is your Ascendant, the start of House 1. House numbers then run counterclockwise.
  5. The top of the wheel is the Midheaven, often linked with career and public life.
  6. The lines across the middle are aspects, linking planets that form an angle.

Don't try to read everything at once. Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising, then add the rest one layer at a time. Our guide to your Big Three is the best first step.

What can't a birth chart do?

A birth chart can't predict a fixed future, and astrology isn't proven science. It's an accurate map of the sky, but the meanings people attach to it are interpretation, not measurement.

A chart can give you a framework for reflecting on your habits, motivations and moods. It can't tell you what will happen to your health, money, relationships or career, and it isn't a substitute for advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser. Scientific testing hasn't shown that charts reliably predict personality or life events.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?

A birth chart is calculated from your own birth date, time and place, so it's personal to you. A daily or weekly horoscope is usually written for everyone who shares a Sun sign. In older usage, a horoscope can also mean a chart, but most people today mean the sign based forecast.

Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?

Yes. Natal chart and birth chart mean the same thing. Natal comes from the Latin word for birth, and both terms describe the map of the sky at the moment you were born.

What does a birth chart show?

A birth chart shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were at your birth, which signs and houses they were in and the angles between them. Astrologers read those placements as themes about your personality, motivations and moods. It's a tool for reflection, not a forecast.

What do you need to make a birth chart?

You need your birth date, your birth time and your birth place. The date gives you your Sun sign and planets in signs, while the time and place give you your Rising sign and houses. Without a birth time you can still get part of a chart.

Is a birth chart accurate?

The astronomy in a birth chart is precise, as long as your birth details are correct and the calculator is well built. The interpretations are a different matter, because astrology isn't proven science. Think of the chart as an accurate map and the readings as a way to reflect.

How do I read a birth chart?

Read it in layers. Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, then look at your other planets in signs, your houses and finally your aspects. Take one layer at a time instead of trying to read the whole wheel at once.
